Founded on the Principles of Limited Government, Free Markets, and Federalism

1973 — ALEC Founded

Since 1973, ALEC has brought together state legislators and private-sector leaders to develop model policies that promote free markets, limited government, and federalism. What began as a small network of like-minded lawmakers has grown into one of the country’s most effective forums for state policy innovation.

Representing Nearly 1 in 4 State Legislators

Today, ALEC members represent nearly a quarter of the country’s state legislators, working together across all fifty states to advance solutions that expand opportunity and prosperity for all Americans.

Building a Legacy of Collaborative Policymaking

Through task forces, model policy development, and events that bring the network together each year, ALEC continues to build on this legacy of collaborative, state-based policymaking.
